Install Guide

HOMEPAGE | DOWNLOADS | INSTALL GUIDE | FAQ | SCREENSHOTS | VIDEOS | CREDITS

This guide is written to be used with 7th Heaven version 2.0. This version is far superior to the old versions. So I suggest you use it. If you must though, the old install guide for version 1.53 is still available here.

If you have questions not answered on this page, try the FAQ first.

To start, there are two ways to install Remako. The first is through the 7th Heaven catalog. This is the easiest way and gives the greatest compatibility with other mods on 7th Heaven, so it really is the recommend way.. The second is the harder manual install. This is there if you really must do it that way.

In Remako update 2.0 this will all be made a lot easier, as it will have been made for 7th Heaven 2.0 from the ground up. Until that is done and people want to play 1.0, it is suggest to just use the catalog install.

Catalog Install (easy)

Step 1: Install 7th Heaven

Now it's time to download and install 7th Heaven 2.0. You can download it here.

For installation and setup of 7th Heaven, this video tutorial should explain everything you need.

Step 2. Download Remako through 7th Heaven catalog

Open up 7th Heaven. Click on Browse Catalog. Download the following mods:
  • World Textures
  • Battle Textures
  • Field Textures
  • Media

Step 3. Enable catalog

Go back to My Mods. Make sure all mods are active. It should look like this now.

Step 3. Enable Remako

Now it's time that the Remako parts are loaded. Double-click on World Textures. Select the option labeled CaptRobau here and click Save. Repeat the same for same for Battle and Field Textures.

Media contains the FMVs. Double-click it and select CaptRobau in the drop-down menu in the Movies tab. The others tabs are up to you to choose. Click save to exit this menu.

Step 4. Play

Now Remako is ready to go. Click on Play to start the game and enjoy Remako.

Manual Install (hard)

As mentioned above, this is not the recommended way to get Remako to run on 7th Heaven 2.0. Use this method at your own risk.

Step 1: Installing Final Fantasy 7

Original Disc Version (1998)

  • When you get the choice between Maximum Install and Standard Install, choose Maximum Install.
  • Install the game in a folder that is NOT Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users. For example C:\Games\Final Fantasy VII.

Square Enix Store Version (2012)

  • Install the game in a folder that is NOT Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users. For example C:\Games\Final Fantasy VII.
  • You will lose achievements, cloud saves and the trainer after the modding process.

Steam Version (2013)

  • Install the game in a folder that is NOT Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users. For example C:\Games\Final Fantasy VII.
  • You will lose achievements, cloud saves and the trainer after the modding process.
If you already have the Steam version of Final Fantasy 7 installed in either a Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users folder, you will have to move it. See this Steam migration guide for a step-by-step process.

Step 2: Install 7th Heaven

Now it's time to download and install 7th Heaven 2.0. You can download it here.

For installation and setup of 7th Heaven, this video tutorial should explain everything you need.

Step 3: Installing yuv.frag

The way that the FMVs in Remako have been generated requires you to overwrite a file. Download the yuv.frag file. Take the file that you downloaded and put it in the shaders folder of your FF7 installation. Overwrite when asked.

The path of the shaders folder probably looks something like this:
  • C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\shaders
  • C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\shaders

Step 4: Installing the rest of Remako

Now that you have 7th Heaven set up, you can install Remako. If you have not downloaded it yet, here is the download page.

Once you have it downloaded, extract the zip files and place the .iro file(s) in your FF7 mods\7th Heaven folder. It should be in your Final Fantasy VII installation.

The path of the mods folder probably looks something like this:
  • C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\mods\7th Heaven
  • C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\mods\7th Heaven

Step 5: Installing the Remako FMVs

The mods upscaled Full Motion Videos need to be installed manually and don't need the 7th Heaven Mod Manager. If you do not want the updated FMVs in Remako, you can skip this step.

Unpack the separate FMVs download or the Complete Download zip file, depending on which you downloaded. Drag the movies folder to the data folder in your FF7 installation. Overwrite when asked.

The path of the data folder probably looks something like this:
  • C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\data
  • C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\data
In the upcoming Remako update, you will be able to manage the Remako FMVs via 7th Heaven.

Step 6: Enabling the mods

Once you've placed the .iro file into that folder, start up 7th Heaven. Make sure every Remako mod entry is set to Active One. Now you have Remako installed and ready to play. Go to the Active Mods page and click on Launch Game.

If this does not work, you might need to Import the IRO files. Click on the Import icon on the right side and import the IRO file from the 'From IRO file' tab.

Have fun!

unfortunately step 7 doesn't work... impossible to find Remako even if the file is in C:\Steam_v2\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\mods
so sad....

I've run into the same issue. Place the Remako file into mods/7th Heaven folder

Better .. Final Fantasy VII/7th Heaven folder in the main files works like a charm Heaven should pick that up quick .. refresh open close.

there's an option to install archive iro, I did that, it worked.

Will installing this remove steam achievements?
Unknown said…
I put it right after the field textures.. seems good so far!
Unknown said…
cant we use our cloud saves after we finish the install ?
Jordan said…
Pretty sure it will, since you have to run FF7 game converted and install the 7th Heaven mod manager. Someone, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Unknown said…
Yeah guide should be updated to reflect that. would be nice.
Anonymous said…
I followed all the steps. Fire up the game- it goes black after the squaresoft logo then crashes and says something 'very bad' happened. If I press any button, it fades out either the eidos or squaresoft graphics and just goes to black and crashes. Thoughts?
Unknown said…
Yes you must copy then drag and drop your save files that you want to use from where they are currently and place them in the saves folder created by the 7th heaven launcher
Unknown said…
they will be where you would find ff7.exe and the folder says saves

Wonderfull mod, congratulations!

do you think it is possible to get this mod, without 7th heaven, to make a version steam version so as not to lose the achievements?
Steven said…
I ran into this, and I think it has something to do with the Reunion/Beacause mod. I disabled that and everything is running just fine for me.
Steven said…
There's a step missing from both this list and the 7th Heaven guide that was necessary to get texture mods to work. It's shown in the video, but I'll save you having to watch the entire thing:

In your Final Fantasy VII install folder, find "ff7_opengl.cfg". At the bottom under Modder Options, change "direct_mode = off" to "direct_mode = on".

The Remako mod appeared to work without this, but all of the other texture mods, while active, failed to actually load new textures without this set.
Unknown said…
what did you exactly disabled?
Anonymous said…
I've followed every step but I still can't see the changes, I've put the mod in ff7/mods/7th heaven, imported it and activated it, put it the first in load order but still haven't managed to make it work

I also have the same issue. So far unable to resolve. I don't have the Reuinion/Because mod installed.

When clicking Launch Game, I get a box titled "Error starting FF7" Inside the box is a huge string of text that I cannot copy and paste, and unfortunately I cannot past a screenshot in here either... I'm going to try to type it all out, which SUCKS. I really hope I get a response for this, lol.

System.ApplicationException: STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR: Unknown error in injected assembler code. YUCK!!! I hope I typed all of that correctly. For the path at the end, there is no such path on my PC, that's referring to a path that doesn't exist (if that even matters). Please help? :)

I can't even get it to work. It just plays through the Eidos and SquareSoft screens then jumps straight to credits and crashes if I do anything.

Yeah, you're getting further than I am at least. I wish it could just be a simple download, overwrite some files, and launch the game. I don't understand why we have to have all of this extra crap.

Right click the 7thheaven and set and set the compatibility to run as as administrator. apply and close.
Then find the FF7 exe you are using eg.. ff7_bc right click and set compatibility to run in 640x480. Don't worry the opengl plugin will override this anyway.
Next go back into 7thheaven and try launching the game.

Before trying to run the game via 7th Heaven, launch the game by itself by clicking the FINAL FANTASY VII game launcher. Windows or Steam will often realize you need distribution packs from Microsoft and proceed to install them. Once you can play the video game by itself normally. Then proceed to try to use 7th Heaven to run the game.
SkyRaven said…
Also do NOT update the 7th Heaven app... If you did, delete the install and extract it again.

Hey everyone...So I ran into this same issue and found a solution to this and got my version to work. I don't know for sure if this works on other installs off FFVII, but it does work for the Steam version. It looks like there is a bug with the newest version of 7th Heaven ver 1.55 that causes this. There are two solutions. One is to revert to the previous version (1.54) OR you have to start the game in steam, play until the first save spot and save your game once in all 10 blocks. Once you do that exit the game and go to your "\Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII Steam\user_(insert yours)" and copy the contents in that folder to your save folder in the modded version. Start up the modded game in 7th Heaven and you're good to go! Here is the original link that I found this out at.

After exhausting pretty much all possibilities, I don't think Remako works with Reunion, or at least not the R05C all-in-one installer. If I just do a clean install of the game, convert it and install Remako in 7thHeaven, Remako works flawlessly. However, if I install Reunion at any time, either before or after Remako, the latter stops working. I'm thinking it has something to do with Beacause, as that has to edit flevel.lgp to change the script and that's conflicting with Remako. Then again, I'm eight years old and I have no idea what a video game even is so idk man.

- Set 'Scaling Options' to 100 and click 'Apply'

Thank-you for this!! The game looks so damn good for originally being so ugly with its ancient polygons and low-resolution, static backgrounds.

I spent 13 hours trying to correct an issue with FF game converter that for some reason messed up the font/text in game and made it impossible to play correctly. Many dialogue boxes were incomplete and you couldnt see which choices to make when talking to characters. It also showed up when accessing the main menu in the game. Many of the words and data were cut off, jumbled together or missing entirely.

I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but after re-installing all mods about 4 times, I changed windows custom DPI scaling to 100%, re-installed the steam version of FF7, re-copied that version into another folder, and then one by one got the latest version of several mod tools included in the "Modding FF7 Setup Files" download. Some of those are out-dated (7th heaven and game converter mainly).

The text problem did not occur until I used the game converter file. Then, after installing "The Reunion" mod, the text got even worse and the game would freeze on random dialogue boxes. I was certain I did everything mentioned in this blog except for the tool included in the "Modding FF7 Setup Files" used for removing FF7 windows registry keys, which may have been the culprit in this situation. It's included in the step-by-step tutorial video you linked at the bottom of this blog, but is not included in your own list of steps.

This was my first experience modding FF7. At first I thought the 7th heaven manager, this blog, and http://forums.qhimm.com/ would be enough to make it a painless process, but it turned out to be a bit frustrating. Now that everything is working (for now), I am extremely pleased with having a butt-load of upgraded textures in one of my classic favorite games that I havent played in ages.

I'm curious, what other mods would you suggest besides Remako, The Reunion and a mod to upgrade the FMV(cut-scenes)? Those 3 seem to cover quite a lot.
Unknown said…
I've been continually confused about the selection of mods and which ones "The Reunion" includes in its "several mods in one" package. I see this incredibly long list of mods and think "arent most of those texture upgrades included in the reunion? Can you mess anything up having more than one texture mod for the same set of textures?"

The second question I had regarding these mods is whether there is a single link or database that lists the download locations and descriptions of all popular FF7 mods. I had a hell of a time trying to find that, and then eventually just settled for the ones listed in the 7th heaven mod manager catalogue.
Unknown said…
Aha. I did suspect that it was not necessary to put the remako IRO file into the final fantasy vii\mods folder. However, I had an issue with text being too large and not displaying correctly so I had to troubleshoot, and I updated FF7 the Game Converter tool and 7th heaven and had no issues what-so-ever. I wonder if the earlier versions included in this blog were included for a reason, or if they are here by accident.
Unknown said…
Searching for "Remako" also did not work for me. I used the "Import" button in 7th heaven and the "from IRO archive", looked for the location of the .iro remako file and it worked like a charm.

This alternative should be included in step 7 in this blog.
Unknown said…
I'm using 7th heaven 1.5.6 and I did not have this issue.
Unknown said…
Mine was already set to on (I never changed it). Be very careful with doing this, as even a minor change in these settings seems to cause the game to stop running correctly. Make a backup of that file before you alter it just in case.
Unknown said…
I had a different issue with text not being displayed properly and ended up downloading 7th heaven version 1.5.6. I've had no issues with it yet.

I got the mod to work. It was a combination of watching the videos and the text explanations for me. The mod works wonders, it really is worth trouble shooting. I have no other mods installed but the battle text where the ATB gauge, health bars etc are located are all messed up. I'm not sure how to describe it, words on top of words and missing bars. Anyone that has run across this I will give you a donut for helping me!
CaptRobau said…
Which .exe is 7th Heaven pointing to? It should be ff7.exe
Unknown said…
I got it working flawlessly. First of all I would say to test on new game as it runs through a cinematic, the map, and a battle sequence all really quickly for trouble shooting. I redid all the installation from the 2 videos above and I got it to work after 18 hours. Do not give up. It is totally worth it, my wife was making fun of the squares in the unmodified version lol. This is better than upscaling or adding simple filters. I noticed 2 things wrong with the videos though if you are only trying to get the remako mod to work I would suggest to do this. In the first video or top video he says to add the bc ff7.exe. Do not do that. CaptRabau use the standard ff7.exe. The second thing I noticed was when they added the remako mod they put it in the 7th heaven folder. Do not do this. Go to where you installed ff7 and look for ff7's mod folder and place the remako mod directly in the "mods" folder. Then when 7th heaven asks for the library location select the location of your ff7 "mods" folder. Also I had under library in 7th heaven I had to "import" from "Iro archive" and browse manually. I hope this works for you all. Other than that if you follow the guide and videos it should work. I was able to get the mod to work, get the battle health bars to work, and my cinematics stopped saying not a png file. Good luck everyone!

If it seems like you are only seeing half of the image on the screen - right click on desk top -> go to your "screen settings" -> look at "Scale and Layout" -> make sure you are at 100% - otherwise anything over that will multiply the size of the play window

I did it on a laptop with win 10 and installed on a different hdd too, and it went smooth, alongside the reunion mod, so i think hdd is not the case, why?
Cuz you tell the game converter there the game is located AFTER starting it.
At my 1st pc there is no way to start it up... Shiet...

Managed to fix the problem.
I made a different user in windows 10 and somehow i could start game editor
But applying it and then remako, broke battle menu. strange symbols appear

Getting the same error message everyone else seems to be getting. The first time I loaded it, it worked perfectly but my controller wasn't working, so exited the game and started getting the System.Application error again. I have followed the instructions to the letter but to no avail. I'm beginning to think this is the fault of the mod itself. The instructions aren't clear. I don't see the point in creating a mod that hardly anybody can use...

➤ When I start FF7 I get an error message saying: STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR [Code:5].

Right-click the 7thHeaven.exe and set the compatibility to run as administrator. Apply and close.
Then find the FF7.exe you are using (ex. ff7.exe or ff7_bc.exe). Right-click and set compatibility to run in 640x480. Don't worry the OpenGL plugin will override this setting later. Go back into 7th Heaven and try launching the game.

Hi people, for what i've seen & read, i found that the mod is so good. FF7 is my favorite game all-time. Anyway, i have a problem with the installation just at the beginning :(. When i run the game converter, it doesn't work. I've tried with everything, run as administrator, disable uac, enviroment variables, run cmd as administrator and then run the game converter, i always got that red box with the message "installation aborted. access denied. run ..... with administrator privileges" or something like that. I also tried to decompress with winrar and then edit the code that check for administrator privileges on the .bat file, with that did i run the .bat, it works until i have to put de directory of the game, i put it and then cmd automatically closes itself.

Please help me with this. And thanks.

PD: also i'm administrator, and the files are in a folder where i have total control. Ah, something more, i have win 10 home edition i think, that could be a problem?

Amazing job, i hope i can try it time soon

There was a post mentioning to make sure in the ff7_opengl.cfg that the "direct_mode = on" (in your FF7 directory)

In 7th heaven I copied and pasted "direct_mode = on" into the Custom GL Config and it started working for me. Looks great! Hopefully this helps others!

I would really appreciate this! I've heard 7th Heaven and Reunion don't play nice together and I'm terrified of losing my save. Would much rather just have files to drag-and-drop into place if at all possible.
Unknown said…
I have a folder called 7th Heaven inside the FF7 main folder along with my normal 7H_1.54 and that the 4 .iro files are there as well? I'm asking because these seems like duplicates of the same files from the mods folder and their size are quite huge. Can we erase those in the folder mods?

I did everything as mention in the guide step by step (using the 1998 version) but there is no sound. Every time the game is trying to start a new music I have an error messsage "can't open music in ....ogg" The FF7/music/vgmstream folder is empty so that explains it. The FF7 installer did not ask for cd2.3.4 so I might have missing files I guess.
Unknown said…
Ok apparently I need a mod called Anxious Heart to have the music in .ogg format but the mod doesn't seems to me around anymore. I guess the music cannot work properly with the original 1998 pc version.
Unknown said…
update: Ok it seems after installing the Reunion patch (Ro5c) the HD backgrounds are not working anymore . I tried activating the "direct_mode" from the ff7_opengl.cfg file but still no hope. I guess the 1998 it's not working with the Remako and Reunion at the same time. It's been two hours of work trying to make this work I'll give up for now.
Unknown said…
For those of you on the 1998 version the music patch is available on nexusmods then you can play with the vgmstream flawlessly. I'm still stuck without the pre-rendered background working but the battle scenes are working so there might be something the Reunion patch does that breaks the pre-rendered from working because it was working before I installed it. BTW, don't install the Reunion mod AFTER Remako because it's adding custom FMVs at a lower resolutions. If anyone got some clues to make the pre-rendered background working (something in the .cfg I guess?) I'm out of ideas. Can't wait to play this :)

I am having the same issue as some several other folks who have gone ignored, where FF7 Game Converter just gets stuck at "Patching..." forever and ever and ever.

Nothing is happening. This seems an awful lot of trouble to go to, as well, I will echo. You really can't expect video game fans to go through such a bunch of rigamarole just to play a game with "nicer graphics." That is not how human beings work.
Unknown said…
You are absolutely right about the hassle to make it working (mine doesn't work either now with the reunion patch applied).
If FFVII would be freeware/abandonware it would be easier because we could just patch the game in a working state, zip it and upload it online and everyone could have it working in HD without issues. I believe the op did a great job explaining step-by-step how to do it but unfortunately it's a hit-or-miss for most people.

PS: You probably know it already but make sure you are using FF7 Game Converter in Administrator Mode.

I *think* I've found a way to make both work at the same time! I used the unpack .iro tool in 7thHeaven to extract the Remako files and dumped everything into the mods/reunion folder. For example I extracted the Remako menu avatars .iro and moved the menu folder into the mods/reunion folder. Hopefully that makes sense!

Just followed all the steps and started the game, which works btw. However, despite 7thHeaven saying the mods are activated they seem not. Now I honestly haven't played that much FF7 before but the opening intro doesn't look that different from how I remember it, and the character models are exactly the same.
I'm not sure how to fix this, 7thHeaven says all the mods are activated and I followed the instructions to the letter but the game still seems to be in its original form.
Also, would this be controller compatible?

I got everything working but for some reason the music sounds off. Even after replacing all the .ogg files in the vgstream folder with the original soundtrack, everything in the game after running 7th Heaven sounds badly mixed and out of key. Does anyone have any experience with this?
MC said…
You need to let the .ogg in the vgmstream folder and the music should sound identical to the PS1 version.
VonSig said…
Did that, yeah. There's nothing in the FF7 > Music directory except the vgmstream folder, which has all the .ogg files. Despite that, the music still sounds wrong - I don't think it's as bad as the midi songs in the original PC version.

As a matter of fact, now that I hear the comparison, I think the songs are actually the YPG 235 versions found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCM1-LIHlKg

Are they being run through some kind of filter on the modded disc?

It works perfect y'all, just read up the comment section after following the initial tut from author. there are certain parts that needs updating such as the mods (iro file) to show up in your library and also which ff7.exe to pick in the settings tab. mine works by picking the ff7_bc.exe and then at the library tab click the import tab and choose from iro archive and find the folder where you have extracted the remako mods there should be 4 files and individually import then 1 by 1 and then just activate. as for order i chose from bottom to top
world textures, menu avatars, pre-render backgrounds, then battle textures and viola finished. launch game and enjoy

Hi Carrie. Didn't see your question until now. LibPNG message can be caused by bad installation of the mod. Please remove the mod's .iro file from your FF7 install and redownload it. Install the mod again.

Gameconverter was stuck on patching for me and the only way I could get it to work was by resetting my PC entirely which was a pretty long process. FF7-REMOVE-Keys wasn't working for me so I had to reset my pc. To avoid this I suggest creating a restore point (system restore) before going through with this install guide. That way you can revert back to the default registry files as that seems to be the main culprit behind Gameconverter stuck on patching.

This is the most unfriendly install for a mod I've ever seen, I'm not a noob when it comes to this stuff but I got the game to run exactly once by following your exact directions, went to play the game again today and now it doesn't work at all. You need to make a standalone installer for this or make a version that is simply drag and drop... judging from the comments section here I'm definitely not the only one that has issues with your ass backwards install method, the FF IX Moguri mod doesn't have all these hoops I have to jump through to get it to work. Most people probably don't care about this having compatibility with other mods, which I assume was your intention with this install process.
Unknown said…
Oh this also broke all my music even after disabling the mods...cool then.
CaptRobau said…
Believe me, I know that it's not the most friendly install procedure out there. Problem is that a lot of it is because the Steam version of FF7 can barely be modded. So half of the install guide is dedicated to convert it back to the 1997 version. But perhaps I can still find some way to streamline this for the next release with an installer of some sort (without compatibility with other mods).

FFIX isn't as messed up as FF7, so Moguri mod will be easier to install because of that.

If that isn't it, search for this step above in the install guide:
"A configuration window will pop up. Check the settings are to your liking. The default settings usually are. Just make sure the Sound Device (see image above) is set to your primary audio device. It should choose that by default. If you have another device set as your Sound Device, you will not have sound."

The game launches, I ear a "blip", than the SE logo, than the Eidos one (but very slowed down...) I can skip them all to be at the main menu, where I choose "New Game". Folks, this is where I encounter my problem. The FMV's sound is on but no image is shown. The game doesn't crashes; and at the end of the FMV the image doesn't show up neither. I don't know if I'm in command of my character or not, but I suppose to be close to the train...

Hi. I love your wonderful mod. It is the only mod I am using to play FF VII.
I have a bit of an issue! I used to use the Beta version - without any problem whatsoever - till yesterday, when I found out that there was a new version. I disabled and uninstall the Beta version, and install and activated the new version. I replaced the older movie folder with the new one and also overwrote the yuv.frag file.
What I immediately noticed was that after any battle, it takes a long time for the battle screen change to the world. It takes almost 20 seconds, where as I did not have this issue when i used the Beta version. Any idea what could be the problem, and how to fix this? Many thanks.

@Hiperborean: never heard this problem before. Is your PC on the weaker side, that it wouldn't be able to handle the HD battle textures? Have you tried to using the HD battle textures, to verify that this is the cause?

Hey, thanks for you work on Remako!
I got it working on The Reunion R06 and overall I think it's a much nicer approach than 7th Heaven. It can be launched directly from Steam, for starters. All I had to do was extract the .iros content to their appropriate folder in The Reunion and the textures got loaded.
Maybe consider the format for future releases (if any are planned), it should save some headache from confused users who couldn't figure out 7th Heaven.
