This guide is written to be used with 7th Heaven version 2.0. This version is far superior to the old versions. So I suggest you use it. If you must though, the old install guide for version 1.53 is still available here.
If you have questions not answered on this page, try the FAQ first.
To start, there are two ways to install Remako. The first is through the 7th Heaven catalog. This is the easiest way and gives the greatest compatibility with other mods on 7th Heaven, so it really is the recommend way.. The second is the harder manual install. This is there if you really must do it that way.
In Remako update 2.0 this will all be made a lot easier, as it will have been made for 7th Heaven 2.0 from the ground up. Until that is done and people want to play 1.0, it is suggest to just use the catalog install.

Catalog Install (easy)
Step 1: Install 7th Heaven
Now it's time to download and install 7th Heaven 2.0. You can download it here.
For installation and setup of 7th Heaven, this video tutorial should explain everything you need.
For installation and setup of 7th Heaven, this video tutorial should explain everything you need.
Step 2. Download Remako through 7th Heaven catalog
Open up 7th Heaven. Click on Browse Catalog. Download the following mods:
- World Textures
- Battle Textures
- Field Textures
- Media
Step 3. Enable catalog
Go back to My Mods. Make sure all mods are active. It should look like this now.
Step 3. Enable Remako
Now it's time that the Remako parts are loaded. Double-click on World Textures. Select the option labeled CaptRobau here and click Save. Repeat the same for same for Battle and Field Textures.
Media contains the FMVs. Double-click it and select CaptRobau in the drop-down menu in the Movies tab. The others tabs are up to you to choose. Click save to exit this menu.
Step 4. Play
Now Remako is ready to go. Click on Play to start the game and enjoy Remako.
Manual Install (hard)
As mentioned above, this is not the recommended way to get Remako to run on 7th Heaven 2.0. Use this method at your own risk.
Step 1: Installing Final Fantasy 7
Original Disc Version (1998)
- When you get the choice between Maximum Install and Standard Install, choose Maximum Install.
- Install the game in a folder that is NOT Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users. For example C:\Games\Final Fantasy VII.
Square Enix Store Version (2012)
- Install the game in a folder that is NOT Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users. For example C:\Games\Final Fantasy VII.
- You will lose achievements, cloud saves and the trainer after the modding process.
Steam Version (2013)
- Install the game in a folder that is NOT Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users. For example C:\Games\Final Fantasy VII.
- You will lose achievements, cloud saves and the trainer after the modding process.
If you already have the Steam version of Final Fantasy 7 installed in either a Program Files, Program Files (x86) or Users folder, you will have to move it. See this Steam migration guide for a step-by-step process.
Step 2: Install 7th Heaven

Step 3: Installing yuv.frag
The way that the FMVs in Remako have been generated requires you to overwrite a file. Download the yuv.frag file. Take the file that you downloaded and put it in the shaders folder of your FF7 installation. Overwrite when asked.
The path of the shaders folder probably looks something like this:
- C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\shaders
- C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\shaders
Step 4: Installing the rest of Remako
Now that you have 7th Heaven set up, you can install Remako. If you have not downloaded it yet, here is the download page.
Once you have it downloaded, extract the zip files and place the .iro file(s) in your FF7 mods\7th Heaven folder. It should be in your Final Fantasy VII installation.
The path of the mods folder probably looks something like this:

- C:\Games\FINAL FANTASY VII\mods\7th Heaven
Step 5: Installing the Remako FMVs
The mods upscaled Full Motion Videos need to be installed manually and don't need the 7th Heaven Mod Manager. If you do not want the updated FMVs in Remako, you can skip this step.
Unpack the separate FMVs download or the Complete Download zip file, depending on which you downloaded. Drag the movies folder to the data folder in your FF7 installation. Overwrite when asked.

In the upcoming Remako update, you will be able to manage the Remako FMVs via 7th Heaven.
Step 6: Enabling the mods
Once you've placed the .iro file into that folder, start up 7th Heaven. Make sure every Remako mod entry is set to Active One. Now you have Remako installed and ready to play. Go to the Active Mods page and click on Launch Game.
If this does not work, you might need to Import the IRO files. Click on the Import icon on the right side and import the IRO file from the 'From IRO file' tab.

Have fun!
Questions
If, after this, you still have questions about setting up FF7 for modding you can:
- Comment below. I can't guarantee I can answer every question, as I did not make the tools used in this guide. But questions regarding Remako I can answer.
- Read the official 7th Heaven page for more info.
- Look for your answer regarding 7th Heaven on the 7th Heaven Qhimm forums.

so sad....
In your Final Fantasy VII install folder, find "ff7_opengl.cfg". At the bottom under Modder Options, change "direct_mode = off" to "direct_mode = on".
The Remako mod appeared to work without this, but all of the other texture mods, while active, failed to actually load new textures without this set.

YUCK!!! I hope I typed all of that correctly. For the path at the end, there is no such path on my PC, that's referring to a path that doesn't exist (if that even matters). Please help? :)
I get this error every time I try to launch the game after doing all of the steps.
Sadly cant find any more information on the install and how to adjust it to work

1) When I lauch the game, it says "postprocessing initialization failed, check log for details".
2) In full screen, image is not centered. So I can only see half of it... I can't add a snapshot here unfortunately...
Now, just keyboard layout is wonky. When it asks you to enter your name for Cloud, no key works as a Select button. So I couldn't get further than that. I'll have to mess with it later. Took me an hour of messing with this just to get it this far.
I get the following error message:
FIND: '." ': No such file or directory
I did a fresh install of the game mounted the ISO but nothing seems to work, please help me.

2. Recheck the blog. Maybe later Remako will be added to the 7th Heaven catalog.
I spent 13 hours trying to correct an issue with FF game converter that for some reason messed up the font/text in game and made it impossible to play correctly. Many dialogue boxes were incomplete and you couldnt see which choices to make when talking to characters. It also showed up when accessing the main menu in the game. Many of the words and data were cut off, jumbled together or missing entirely.
I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but after re-installing all mods about 4 times, I changed windows custom DPI scaling to 100%, re-installed the steam version of FF7, re-copied that version into another folder, and then one by one got the latest version of several mod tools included in the "Modding FF7 Setup Files" download. Some of those are out-dated (7th heaven and game converter mainly).
The text problem did not occur until I used the game converter file. Then, after installing "The Reunion" mod, the text got even worse and the game would freeze on random dialogue boxes. I was certain I did everything mentioned in this blog except for the tool included in the "Modding FF7 Setup Files" used for removing FF7 windows registry keys, which may have been the culprit in this situation. It's included in the step-by-step tutorial video you linked at the bottom of this blog, but is not included in your own list of steps.
This was my first experience modding FF7. At first I thought the 7th heaven manager, this blog, and http://forums.qhimm.com/ would be enough to make it a painless process, but it turned out to be a bit frustrating. Now that everything is working (for now), I am extremely pleased with having a butt-load of upgraded textures in one of my classic favorite games that I havent played in ages.
I'm curious, what other mods would you suggest besides Remako, The Reunion and a mod to upgrade the FMV(cut-scenes)? Those 3 seem to cover quite a lot.
The second question I had regarding these mods is whether there is a single link or database that lists the download locations and descriptions of all popular FF7 mods. I had a hell of a time trying to find that, and then eventually just settled for the ones listed in the 7th heaven mod manager catalogue.
This alternative should be included in step 7 in this blog.

win 10
i see black command screen go up and then instantly gone. Nothing more.
Game is installed at other hard drive. Is that a problem??
However, i had one more step
If it seems like you are only seeing half of the image on the screen - right click on desk top -> go to your "screen settings" -> look at "Scale and Layout" -> make sure you are at 100% - otherwise anything over that will multiply the size of the play window
Cuz you tell the game converter there the game is located AFTER starting it.
At my 1st pc there is no way to start it up... Shiet...
I made a different user in windows 10 and somehow i could start game editor
But applying it and then remako, broke battle menu. strange symbols appear

➤ When I start FF7 I get an error message saying: STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR [Code:5].
Right-click the 7thHeaven.exe and set the compatibility to run as administrator. Apply and close.
Then find the FF7.exe you are using (ex. ff7.exe or ff7_bc.exe). Right-click and set compatibility to run in 640x480. Don't worry the OpenGL plugin will override this setting later. Go back into 7th Heaven and try launching the game.
Please help me with this. And thanks.
PD: also i'm administrator, and the files are in a folder where i have total control. Ah, something more, i have win 10 home edition i think, that could be a problem?
Amazing job, i hope i can try it time soon
All these steps are really necessary??? Thank you :)
There was a post mentioning to make sure in the ff7_opengl.cfg that the "direct_mode = on" (in your FF7 directory)
In 7th heaven I copied and pasted "direct_mode = on" into the Custom GL Config and it started working for me. Looks great! Hopefully this helps others!
There's some minor nuisance such as a white pixel below some words on the Menu/UI.
Followed the instructions exactly.. it loaded once to the start menu but no inputs would work. Had to force the game to close in task manager. After that I get an error message every time I try to launch. Tried restarting, tried setting everything up again from scratch.. Same error message every time.

Controls could be fixed by the laptop patch in this guide or by rebinding the keys. Before that only space, enter and the numpad arrows might work

bye
Hope it helps :)
I did everything as mention in the guide step by step (using the 1998 version) but there is no sound. Every time the game is trying to start a new music I have an error messsage "can't open music in ....ogg" The FF7/music/vgmstream folder is empty so that explains it. The FF7 installer did not ask for cd2.3.4 so I might have missing files I guess.
Nothing is happening. This seems an awful lot of trouble to go to, as well, I will echo. You really can't expect video game fans to go through such a bunch of rigamarole just to play a game with "nicer graphics." That is not how human beings work.
If FFVII would be freeware/abandonware it would be easier because we could just patch the game in a working state, zip it and upload it online and everyone could have it working in HD without issues. I believe the op did a great job explaining step-by-step how to do it but unfortunately it's a hit-or-miss for most people.
PS: You probably know it already but make sure you are using FF7 Game Converter in Administrator Mode.
I'm not sure how to fix this, 7thHeaven says all the mods are activated and I followed the instructions to the letter but the game still seems to be in its original form.
Also, would this be controller compatible?
As a matter of fact, now that I hear the comparison, I think the songs are actually the YPG 235 versions found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCM1-LIHlKg
Are they being run through some kind of filter on the modded disc?
I really want to play it but I can not find a solution :/

FFIX isn't as messed up as FF7, so Moguri mod will be easier to install because of that.

If that isn't it, search for this step above in the install guide:
"A configuration window will pop up. Check the settings are to your liking. The default settings usually are. Just make sure the Sound Device (see image above) is set to your primary audio device. It should choose that by default. If you have another device set as your Sound Device, you will not have sound."

Any clue from anyone?

I have a bit of an issue! I used to use the Beta version - without any problem whatsoever - till yesterday, when I found out that there was a new version. I disabled and uninstall the Beta version, and install and activated the new version. I replaced the older movie folder with the new one and also overwrote the yuv.frag file.
What I immediately noticed was that after any battle, it takes a long time for the battle screen change to the world. It takes almost 20 seconds, where as I did not have this issue when i used the Beta version. Any idea what could be the problem, and how to fix this? Many thanks.
I got it working on The Reunion R06 and overall I think it's a much nicer approach than 7th Heaven. It can be launched directly from Steam, for starters. All I had to do was extract the .iros content to their appropriate folder in The Reunion and the textures got loaded.
Maybe consider the format for future releases (if any are planned), it should save some headache from confused users who couldn't figure out 7th Heaven.
ay better instructions than what CaptRobau has...
Remako works fine if instructions below are followed. Fixes the errors you see on Win 10 / Steam version:
