FF7 Remako HD Graphics Mod Beta Released


Note: 1.0 has released. Check it out.

After a few weeks of waiting, the moment is finally here: the Remako HD Graphics Mod for Final Fantasy VII sees its first release.

What is the Remako Mod?

The Remako HD Graphics Mod is a mod that completely revamps the pre-rendered backgrounds of the classic JRPG Final Fantasy VII. All of the backgrounds now have 4 times the resolution of the original.

Using state of the art AI neural networks, this upscaling tries to emulate the detail the original renders would have had. This helps the new visuals to come as close to a higher resolution re-rendering of the original as possible with current technology.

Below are two trailers. One is a comparison of the raw images, while the other shows off the mod in action.

Who can play it?

Everyone who owns any of the PC releases of Final Fantasy VII. So whether you have the original 97 disc release, the 2012 Square Enix Store version, or the most recent 2013 Steam version, you can enjoy this mod.

How far done is it?

The entire game is converted and so it is fully playable. Because Final Fantasy VII is a big game and I haven't yet had a chance to check every nook and cranny of the game, I can't guarantee that I've squashed all bugs or graphical imperfections. This is why the mod will be first released as a beta.

I wonder, is it possible to also upscale the 3D model textures using the same method? I think there are already some HD textures for the models in the "Tifa's Final Heaven" mod program, but I think your AI method would give even better results 😉

Based on the gameplay video, it looks like the battle backgrounds are unchanged. Is there a reason for that?

The battle backgrounds are not simply fixed images but 3D scenes where the blurry images are textures on polygons. I imagine this technique could be used on those textures as well but it would be more difficult and a lot of work (making sure the UV mappings are preserved correctly in the new texture resolutions, etc). Also, the results might not be as good as with the image backgrounds because those were actually high resolution drawings in the begining that were downsampled and that is what the AI is trained to work with, I don't think (but don't know) the polygon textures were ever made in high resolution so the AI might try to restore detail that was never there with strange results. It would be better than nothing though, surely.

Looks great so far, but a bit crunchy looking in some places too although I imagine the balance between complete smoothness and adding sharpness is a place between blurry and preserving detail. I will keep following for more improvements! Keep up the good work!!!

Two hours in. Cannot for the life of me figure out why 7H crashes with an EasyHook error (unknown error in injected assembler code) on launch. I've perused the Easyhook forumposts and 7H posts. Have tried two different Win10 machines, fresh installs, 7th Heaven 1.54. I've downloaded .net and C++ libraries, found a new version of EasyHook (7H has version control embedded so it will not allow the newer version DLL). Once in about 15 or so attempts it will launch, but never when I have the Remako mod activated. Has anyone else had this issue? https://imgur.com/a/fURJv4y

I just got it to work here.

When copy the "Remako_HD_Graphics_Mod_BETA_0.1.iro" into the "FINAL FANTASY VII\mods\7th Heaven" and not to "FINAL FANTASY VII\mods".
It worked for me.
And, do not update 7thHeaven.
Configure the OpenGL with yours choices.

Thanks for the input. I just tried again, copying the iro to \FF7\mods\7th Heaven\ then importing to library / installing. Also, I saw you need to run the game once after patching but before activating any mods. I am still getting this error unfortunately. I have tried all combinations of settings for openGL. I am sure to have a sound card selected in FF7 config. Have tried compatibility modes.

I've followed every step but I still can't see the changes, I've put the mod in ff7/mods/7th heaven, imported it and activated it, put it the first in load order but still haven't managed to make it work
Hi. Your work is astonishing, but I'd also like to request a different link. Mega only allows about half the size of this file for free users, and since I never use the service, paying for an account for just that one file seems a bit excessive. Alternatively, maybe you can split it into two or three files? That way we can at least download one part a day.

I was able to get it running just fine on my setup after trial and error. My mistake was trying to combine The Reunion, Aali's Driver, and 7H but just gave up and used 7H's version of Menu Overhaul and Retranslation instead. Still getting laggy menus when my Laptop isn't plugged into the power source but otherwise runs smoothly now. I do hope that this gets implemented differently in the future so I can get the original look of the game back, not be forced to use Menu Overhaul, and use 60fps battles. All that said, the game is fun to marvel at!!!

Hey just wanted to tell you the mod works fine and i am totally thankful! I love this game since i was 12 years old (I am 32 now) and belive it or not, i never finished it! But i probably started it from the beginning a 100 times by now. I always didnt like the low res backgrounds so this is a real gift to me! :)

Thank you very much for this mod and I hope you keep polishing it in future, this was one of my favourite games of all time and all remakes left out FF7 beautiful backgrounds, the change from old Crt tv's to LCD widescreens and higher rezolutions stretched the images so bad the backgrounds were terrible and this was one of the most beautiful things ff7 had!, so thank you once again for making the game more palatable to play.
Thank you, but I got around it anyway simply by continuing the download each day until the limit was done because, thankfully, the link didn't restart each day, it just continued from where it was left off (which I didn't know it would do, otherwise I wouldn't have asked). Took three days, but I got it!

You've done a great job and I really appreciate your work! It works perfectly fine with my pc. However, is it possible for you to consider including your mod to The Reunion? I want to try the latest update of Beacause which is included in The Reunion but I don't think there is anyway to use both The Reunion and 7H - the game always crashes and won't start.

hi, i really would like to use this mod, however it somehow conflicts with the reunion mod, it makes battles 15 frames again and somehow breaks the ui, i understand that compatability with a mod you have nothing to do with is low on the list of fixes, but it would be great if you adressed this

Videos black and white levels mismatch, also videos look lowres. You should extract video by frames, 1st correct black and white level (most likely it would be usual 16-235 range) to match in game textures, apply same black and white level to all textures first, then upscale them.

Hey there, this is some amazing work and wanted to ask a couple of (admittedly probably fairly ignorant) questions.
Firstly, would it be possible to use the same machine learning algorithm to enhance images further, by splitting the improved images into quarters and running the algorithm again on each quarter separately? If it works the way I think it does, by essentially upscaling images of a certain resolution, could that initial resolution not be cut out of the finished image and run through again? Then the 4 quarters could be joined back together, possibly making a 4K image, or perhaps downscaled back to 1080 afterwards for potentially even further improved visuals?
Secondly, do you think it could be possible to use machine learning to adapt these images to a widescreen format? I know it sounds far-fetched, but then 5 years ago so did this kind of upscaling, so...

For those who have "Error 5" with 7H. Right-click your FF7 exe of choice, set compatibility mode to Windows XP. Check 640x480, disable fullscreen optimizations. Be sure you're running 7H as Admin (obvious). After hours of fooling around, found this posted @ Quimm and it was a winner!

Greetings, I just wanted to say thank you so much for this mod, it's absolutely incredible. I was just wondering if you had any plans to make this compatible with The Reunion mod. Using Reunion and 7th Heaven together makes text boxes glitch out at times and the only lacking part of the mod is the backgrounds.

If you could somehow make it compatible in anyway, that would be amazing.

Yes, but you have to move the save files from the old location to the new location. You can use windows search to find the old saves by searching for *.ff7

Mine were in "Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII Steam"

Move those to the "save" folder inside your FF7 game folder.

No, not as far as I know. Modding FF7 for Steam is done by reverting the game back into the form it had when originally released on CD-Rom in '97. Then the mod manager can hook in and allow you to change things. This process is not possible on Android I would think.

Try this:

Right click the 7thheaven and set and set the compatibility to run as as administrator. apply and close.
Then find the FF7 exe you are using eg.. ff7_bc right click and set compatibility to run in 640x480. Don't worry the opengl plugin will override this anyway.
Next go back into 7thheaven and try launching the game.

Doing it in quarters would cause seams. The program I use can magnify to a max of 6x right now and in the future maybe higher. But the improvements are hard to notice and balloon the download size even more. So 4x is a good size for now.

Most textures are larger than a 16:9 ratio would need, but you don't see that because of the 4:3 ratio used by the game. A widescreen hack would need to be made that changes the in-game camera (that is looking at the textures + the character models on top) to a 16:9 ratio. Such a mod does not exist I believe.

This would be hard to do. A - unlike let's say the N64 or Wii, there aren't any (mainstream) emulators that support changing textures in SNES games. B - pixel art and upscaling don't reall well together (right now). All of the models are training on real photos, so they can't really cope with pixel art.

I got this to work with the Reunion mod finally but, there are a couple of problems with it still which I believe (after some testing) are attributable to the game converter. Is there any chance that you could work with the Reunion mod team to add it to their installer, make your own installer for it, or release the files with instructions so we can add them manually?
I really like what you've done with this mod and being able to combine your work with the work done by the Reunion mod team would be awesome.

Hi I got the Mod to work and am extremely impressed. I have been modifying all my old and new games since I first got my hands on a pc. I have never seen such a dramatic improvement like this! it went from blocks to detail. it's amazing. you're really good. However I do have an issue now that I have complimented you lol. My mod works wonders, I have no other mods, nothing else. But the battle text is messed up where the ATB gauge, health bar etc are located. If you have any idea I would greatly appreciate it. This is a jump in the way old games are now modded

I have tried to install this several times now without success. My game is patched, not installed in Program Files, and I have only the four Remako mods installed. Everything appears to be installed and activated within 7th Heaven. When I launch the game through 7th Heaven, however, nothing has changed. The original, blocky textures are still there and the resolution is 640 X 480. Please, if anyone has any suggestions to help let me know!

Completed a Highlight Reel of the game with the mod. Covers almost everything except for a lot of random battles.

7th Heaven seems to just break after a while, sometimes even after 1 PC restart, had to install windows 7 as well just to get it running when I was recording, had to get all of the footage in one shot.
